The dance ended, they danced the next one together, and they only refrained from dancing a third when Cassandra insisted it would be far too scandalous. The Duke relented, although there was a mischievous glint in his eyes that told her he could have kept dancing with her all night, scandal be damned, if she hadn’t put an end to it.

“I need to freshen up in the powder room anyway,” she said as he led her off of the dance floor. “My hair is coming undone, and I’m flushed from the exercise.”

“I prefer you flushed,” he countered, which had what she suspected was the desired effect of making her flush more.
